19th September

This afternoon I spent two hours on the phone.

One was a potential home for a dog, always a priority. The next came through immediately I put the phone down, two dogs urgently needing to come in.

Then chasing up the medical history of the new dog before her appointment at our vets tomorrow.

Then background checks on potential home.

As it stands at the moment I have not heard back from potential home or dogs needing to come in.

The medical history drew a blank, as per normal, we will start vaccines over again.

Background checks also got nowhere.

Wasted time?

Certainly time I would rather have spent in my garden on such a lovely afternoon, but I do not believe any time is wasted, more an investment, who knows what will come from this?

Things can change very fast in rescue … meet our new girl Tiddles or Tids (because she is very small)

Just 2 hours after taking the call we had taken her in!

She will be 8 on Saturday, a lovely little pied girl.

She had started fighting with the other Stafford  she had lived with for years so was crated but her owners then felt it was not fair on her so they asked us to help.

She needs to be the only dog/pet in the house but she is not overly reactive when out and walked happily with Bella today.

She does  jump up a bit but with training this could be overcome.

She has lived with young children and is a typical Stafford loving cuddles and sleeping on your bed.

We have heard from Ozzy’s new owner, Frederick Cuss a year on from adopting him, he says he is fantastic. This was a match made in heaven!

Also some photos of a new slimline Lexie very happy with her new family.

Bella has been walking with Scruffy every weekday morning since our holiday, he adores her, I am not sure the feeling is mutual!

I did a new write up for her on the website including some of the photos taken during her stay with Jane. One of Jane’s friends who met her when she was there has crafted this needle felt of Bella, we think it has really caught her likeness, so clever.

Look who has come to stay for a couple of weeks!

It’s Skyla … a mini tornado!

These three are old friends, they have a stack of energy between them.

Background story to August calendar photo: Skye and Poppy

Skye was originally Dolly and was adopted at 6 months old by Shirley and family, but before they had Skye they had Trina.

Trina came from south London, her owner drove her down. She was a lovely girl. While she was fostered with us I used to walk her up to the bus stop each morning to see Sam off on the school bus and Trina would try to get on the bus, earning her the nick name, ‘Bus dog.’

Shirley and family adopted Trina aged 6 just before Christmas in 2007 and they enjoyed several happy years together before Trina became ill and they sadly lost her.

Ever on the look out for a good home I think I kept suggesting various dogs to Shirley and was a bit dismayed when she told me they had adopted two kittens!

It was the sister of Dolly’s owner who contacted us first, her sister was on her own with a young child and was not coping with the puppy as well, the inference was that the child was not safe with ‘one of those sort of dogs!’

Dave came with me when we went to pick her up. Dolly seemed very sweet and was not too big for 6 months. The girl had a new man she seemed preoccupied with, while we stood waiting the little lad toddled in seemingly very interested to have two strangers in his house, he climbed up onto the sofa and plonked himself down looking at us then Dolly came in jumped onto the sofa and sat down next to him as quiet and gentle as anything! He gestured to the puppy, then looked back at us and said,’Doggy.’

Then Mum returned, the paperwork was signed and Dave and  I walked away down the path with Dolly and the screams and sobs of the little lad behind us as we took away his best friend.

I have rarely seen such a young puppy be so calm and gentle around a young child and it was clear they loved each other.

It was one of the worst moments in the ten years I have been running the rescue.

Dolly reminded me of Trina and I reckoned a puppy would settle with kittens so I made that call and a week later on 17th Feb 2010  Dolly joined Shirley and family and the kittens and the success is evident in the photo.

Thank you to Shirley and family for giving two of our dogs a lovely home.

Back story to our July Calendar picture Harry and Trixie, ‘Phew! Hot enough to fry an egg on this patio.’

An appropriate picture for this summer apart from the last two weeks.

You have heard the expression, ‘joined at the hip,’ well you can see from this photo that Harry and Trixie are mirror images of each other, a couple of bookends and inseparable. Their story is remarkable and they are Guildford Stafford Legends!

They are also on the calendar in December so we will just hear the first part of their story now and find out how they managed to be ‘Together again,’ in December.

Their story began when a young man bought Harry and a year later bought Trixie. Trixie got ‘caught’ on her first season and had two pups, probably because of the dogs, he lost his accommodation and his job. He was desperate to keep his dogs somehow and booked them all into the local kennels, running up huge bills but hoping he would find a job and be able to find somewhere to live and have his dogs back.

As hope of this began to fade he signed Trixie over to us and then the puppies.

Trixie’s puppies

We quickly found the puppies (two girls) homes, Trixie went to a foster home and from there was adopted by Sam Horscroft and Jim as a companion to their elderly female Staffie, Suzy in March 2008. Trixie was 14 months old.

Harry remained in kennels and eventually and very reluctantly, when his money ran out his owner signed Harry over to us too.

A recent picture of Trixie

Sam knew about Harry but was unable to take him as well as she had Suzy but she never forgot about him. Read in December how they came to be ‘Together Again’  … to be continued …

We have received our cheque from Pets at Home Support Adoption Summer Fundraiser, for an amazing £601.72 !!!

A HUGE THANK YOU to the staff and customers of Godalming Pets at Home store for their generosity and to Jane Burt for helping, that is a big boost towards funds. (Not one of our best photos!!)

Bella has had a ‘Dental,’ her teeth checked and cleaned up, all was pretty good, just one small tooth removed, hopefully her breath will smell sweeter now! She also had bloods checked and all was fine, so she should have several years left in her to make someone a wonderful companion.
